I Could Write Things That Absolutely Horrify People
Instead I committed to writing about gratitude every week.
I do also write about grief, every Wednesday here on Substack. And to balance it, I write about gratitude on Thursdays. Because I believe the universe prefers balance.
I was raised in a society that tells women they are supposed to be grateful for the little they have and not complain about inequality. The society tells people with brown skin the same thing.
THIS is why I show up in grief every week.
Because I’m sick and tired of being told I’m supposed to be grateful for getting less than lots of other people. This is some tired-ass brain-washing used by fascist parents.
Ask me how I know.
My parents drilled into my exactly how grateful I should be for having so much more than others despite the fact I had much less than 90 percent of the population. Legit. I went to Head Start in 1980 because my family’s annual household income when I was five was less than $5,000. Placing us in the lowest tenth of the population.
